Stop Food Wastage
In Georgia alone, 1 in 7 people struggles with hunger, and the number is worse for children, with 1 in every 5 kids struggling with getting the proper nutrition in order to grow healthily.
As one of the pillars of Coding for Community regarding technological innovation with a social focus, we have developed an app called “Stop Food Wastage” available on Google Android and Apple iPhone. This app connects restaurants and charities in the local Atlanta community so that restaurants with excess food can easily post their leftovers. Once these leftovers are posted, nearby charities and food pantries are notified of the posting via the the “Stop Food Wastage” app interface. The charities and food pantries can then claim the food and distribute it to those in need. Thousands of tons of food are wasted unnecessarily every year in our country, and any effort to redirect this food towards the nourishment and care of these underprivileged children is extremely beneficial. At present, we have partnered with several local restaurants and charities in our first few months post-release, leading to reduced food wastage in the Atlanta area.
